Frederick E. Swain, Jr.

SALEM - Frederick E. Swain, Jr. was born in Grandview, Wash. from the marriage of Fred E. Swain (born New Rockford, N.D.) and Nellie O. Davey (born Greene Township, Ohio). He had one sister, Lucille, born nine years before him. He attended schools in Grandview and Yakima, Wash., was graduated from Yakima High School, and attended Yakima Valley Junior College. He entered the Army in August of 1943 and served both in the continental United States and in the central and south Pacific Ocean areas.
He was honorably discharged in March 1946 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. In the years which followed he attended University of Washington, Whitman College, University of California at Berkeley. He married Margery Jane (Peggy) Gardner in Concord, Calif. on December 26, 1949. She died June 15, 1995.
From this union were born two children, Martha and Frederick III. Grandchildren are Hilarie Joy Laughman, Heidi Swain Thomas, Isaac Swain, Molly Swain. Great grandson is Caylen James Thomas.
Frederick E. Swain, Jr. would later attend Multnomah College, Portland State College and others, earning an interdisciplinary baccalaureate degree from Marylhurst College with specialization in management.
He was for ten years a territory manager for Wesson Oil and Snowdrift Sales Company; five years accounting supervisor for Sawyer’s Incorporated, fifteen years with State of Oregon as accounting supervisor for State Welfare, Fiscal Analysis Officer and later Internal Auditor for Oregon Employment Division. He was recognized professionally as a Certified Internal Auditor. Other positions of shorter duration were with Bank of America in Oakland and Berkeley, Calif., General Electronics in Portland, and as owner/manager of a private employment agency known as Pacific Placement. For several years he served in various capacities as an adult leader in Boy Scouts of America.
Margery G. Swain died June 15, 1995. Frederick E. Swain, Jr. married Deborah Ann Mills on May 9, 1998. Deborah was born Jan. 7, 1928 in Brookline, Mass. from the union of Roger Ernest Mills and Vida Esther Carr Mills. Deborah’s children from a previous marriage are Jennifer, Jeffery, Judith, Joan, and Jarita. An informal memorial gathering will be held on Friday, March 5, at 1 p.m. at the Gentle House on the campus of Western Oregon University in Monmouth.
